Bill Mollison, the originator of permaculture, has come up with a capital idea for funding eco-restoration. In his 1989 Schumacher Lecture, published in a recent issue of Resurgence (Jul/Aug 1990), Mollison proposes that women exert their hidden financial power.

Surprisingly large percentages of investment capital are owned by women. They don’t handle very much of it. Almost all of it is handled by men. I simply suggest to women that they take it out, form groups of investors, and decide themselves whether they are for or against this Earth. Because if we could direct that investment capital towards the Earth’s repair – and this is our last chance, I.think – then we could repair it. If we leave it with the sociopaths who are handling investment systems at present, we will die, and we will pay for our own death, and fund our own destruction.
