While not the major focus of his work, Robert is a skilled facilitator and has taken on this role in strategic situations that help to advance the larger sustainability agenda. For example, he has been the facilitator for:

• a three-month process, January through March 1999, during which the Findhorn Community in Scotland developed a community constitution and established its own self-governance
  
  
• an invitational Green Building Retreat in August 1997 involving key representatives from the American Institute of Architects' Committee on the Environment, the US Green Building Council, The Urban Land Institute, and the American Solar Energy Society
  
  
• a design conference in January 1994 on Sustainable Community Relocation for the Midwest communities that planned to relocate after the 1993 Mississippi and Missouri floods
