Robert has worked as a consultant with a variety of organizations,
professional groups, and community groups to help them make changes
toward greater sustainability. Here are some examples of what
he has done:
- Helped the North Shore Environmental Coalition of Oahu, Hawaii,
to work with local and county government officials to develop
a sustainable development plan for their region in 1996
- Created a background paper on trends related to sustainability
and cultural change for the Dutch Ministry of Public Works in
1994.
- Participated in a select national task force to help bring
sustainable design into the center of the curriculum at American
schools of architecture in 1994
- Helped organize, with the AIA, a feasibility study (involving
more than 90 experts from around the country) for the Clinton
administrations plan to environmentally upgrade the White House
buildings (The Greening of the White House) in 1993
- Helped design the 1993 World Congress of Architects in Chicago
on the theme of Designing for a Sustainable Future, sponsored
by the International Union of Architects (UIA) and the American
Institute of Architects (AIA), and attended by over 10,000 building
industry professionals from around the world
- Wrote the program for the UIA/AIA 1993 international competition,
"A Call for Sustainable Community Solutions", which
drew more than 400 entries from 55 countries, and was judged
and highlighted at the World Congress
- Drafted and edited the main declaration of World Congress
(on the responsibilities of the architectural profession for
sustainable development), which was proclaimed by the presidents
of the UIA and AIA, and signed by over 3000 congress participants
- Wrote a report, "Eco-Villages and Sustainable Communities",
for Gaia Trust of Denmark and then worked with Gaia Trust to
lay the foundation for the Global Eco-Village Network (GEN) in
1991
- Developed the Household EcoTeam Program for the Global Action
Plan and wrote and designed the Household EcoTeam Workbook in
1990
