If smoking fields of stumps make you feel sure there has to be a better way, and/or you have a few treed acres from which you'd like to harvest lumber (yet leave a viable ecosystem behind), here is a valuable resource: the Institute for Sustainable Forestry prepared a draft document this spring, "Forest Practice Guidelines for Certified Ecologically Produced Wood." It's written by some of the most experienced environmentally concerned lumber folks in Northern California. For information about this document and other work the Institute is doing, contact: Institute for Sustainable Forestry, PO Box 1580, Redway, CA 95560, 707/923-4719.

We learned about the Institute's work from a friend who also let us know about a periodical, The Steelhead Special, that we found irresistible. The Special reports on working-class culture (as well as alternative employment opportunities) amidst some of the best poetry and most colorful writing to grace a newsprint 'zine we've ever seen. The Special's editor, Crawdad Nelson, let us use this photo. You can reach him at PO Box 219, Bayside, CA 95524.
