SOME PERSONAL NOTES

(Those of you who are new to Context Institute may be surprised by the personalness of this newsletter, but if you look back at my writings in IN CONTEXT you will see that it was part of the CI tradition. To catch up on what has been happening with Context Institute in the last few years, see http://www.context.org/CINEWS/cinewsar.htm)

It has been a long time (16 months) since the last issue of CI-NEWS and many of you are no doubt wondering what is going on with Context Institute. Things have been happening behind the scenes, as you will soon see, but I've been quiet about it all because I've still been in a personal and inward space. Diane's death (my late wife and co-founder of CI who died in January 1998, see http://www.context.org/CINEWS/cinews98.htm) has had an understandable major impact on me and on CI. In many ways I too went through a death and it feels now as if I am in the early stages of the third incarnation in this body (first as an astrophysicist, second as the founder, editor, and publisher of IN CONTEXT, and now ), and I've decided to take the time to enjoy this childhood.

In this gentle way I've been exploring "who am I now?" and "what does CI need to be now?" I don't have crisp answers to articulate yet, but I'm getting more of a feel for the essence. I'd like to share that essence with you, not by describing it, but by examples of what has been happening "out of the public view" for CI.

INTRODUCING ROBINA MCCURDY

For about a year now I've been blessed to have a new friend and colleague in the person of Robina McCurdy. I won't repeat what is in her bio (http://www.context.org/PEOPLE/RMBio.htm) but I'll add to it by saying that Robina played an important behind-the-scenes role in the work we did at Findhorn (see next item), has been a great help in clarifying CI's next steps, and, being a New Zealander, has been central to the development of our programs for New Zealand (see last item). I think you'll enjoy meeting her, and she definitely brings some clues about the emerging essence of CI.

FORMING THE NEW FINDHORN ASSOCIATION

I spent January through March of this year at the Findhorn Community in northern Scotland helping them form a community-wide governance structure, and I'm happy to report that so far it is working. The story is well told at http://www.context.org/GROUPS/NFA/index.html

FINDING THE LEVERAGE FOR CHANGE

I was invited to be part of an invitational meeting in September on new approaches to philanthropy, called Creative Wealth, but was unable to attend because in came too soon after my daughter had major surgery. I sent this paper instead (http://www.context.org/GROUPS/CW/paper.htm)

WORKSHOPS IN NEW ZEALAND

I'm about to join Robina in New Zealand where we will do a series of presentations and workshops, including:

"What Time Is It?"
"An Introduction to Ecovillage Development"
"Practical Applications of Sustainable Economics"
"Practical Know-how for Change Agents"
"From Soul To Society"

Descriptions and other specifics of these are at http://www.context.org/GROUPS/CI/nz/nzsched.htm

With much appreciation of your interest and support,

Robert Gilman
