DIANE GILMAN 1945 - 1998
This is certainly an issue of CI-NEWS that I had hope to never
write.
Diane Gilman died peacefully in her own bed on Wednesday, January
21, 1998, thus bringing to a close a blessedly pain-free and anxiety-free
final chapter on her wonderful life in this world. By all reports
she is now off to a great start in the next world.
She requests, with my hearty support, that you celebrate with
her: a life well led, an exit gracefully negotiated, a new spiritual
life well begun.
We will have a memorial celebration for her on Valentine's
Day, 14 February. We are also planning to make this celebration
available world-wide to those who knew Diane through a private
"web-cast" over the Internet. If you knew her (and there
are many on this list who did) and would like to join in the celebration
that day, either here or via the web-cast, please write to me
directly (rgilman@context.org) for further information.
Finally a big THANK YOU to all who responded to Ann Medlock's
appeal in the last CI-News. The Context Institute Back Salary
Fund is growing and the financial wolf has backed off from the
Gilman Family door. If you have already contributed, again, THANK
YOU. If you haven't and would like to, in this way, help continue
Diane's work, please send a check to Context Institute (PO Box
946 Langley WA 98260).
Your patience through all this is greatly appreciated. It will
take me a few months to get my life back in order again after
which time you will definitely be hearing more from Context Institute.

CELEBRATING DIANE
We had a wonderful memorial celebration for Diane Gilman, the co-founder of
CI, on Valentine's Day, 14 February. I have posted the transcript from the event,
together with pictures, at http://www.context.org/memorial/ [no longer available
as of July 2000]. If Diane's life touched you in any way, I welcome you to visit
this site and share with us in her celebration.
SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES CONFERENCE II
AT FINDHORN
17-24 OCTOBER 1998
Findhorn is returning to the theme of ecovillages and sustainable
communities for their major fall conference this year -- and I'll
be there as a speaker. Diane was a key organizer for the October
1995 Findhorn ecovillage conference (http://www.findhorn.org/edu/eduecoconf.html
and http://www.findhorn.org/press/eco.html)
-- a truly wonderful event -- and this new conference promises
to be another delight AND movement milestone.
The official title is, "Creating Sustainable Community
- Here, There and Everywhere," and the speakers include Hazel
Henderson (noted futurist and economist), Satish Kumar (editor
of Resurgence), Stephen Gaskin (founder of The Farm in Tennesse),
and many others from the growing edge of sustainable community
development -- all of this in a magical setting (northern Scotland)
where a wonderful community is hard at work making the vision
real. The combination makes for an experience that is delightful,
inspiring, and unlike any thing else I've ever experienced.
You can find out more by visiting http://www.findhorn.org/Edu/suscomconf.html
If this conference might in any way be a possibility for you,
I strongly urge you to consider being part of it.
AND FINALLY ...
a big THANK YOU to all who sent donations, sent messages of
support, and in various other ways reached out to our family and
to CI at this time. Your support, in all its forms, has been most
welcome.

AFFLUENZA & ESCAPE FROM AFFLUENZA
It feels out of character for me to be recommending TV programs,
but this pair of PBS specials is especially good. AFFLUENZA, a
beautifully done look at consumerism, came out last year and will
be re-broadcast tomorrow (July 2) over PBS. Then on July 7th PBS
will broadcast the sequel: ESCAPE FROM AFFLUENZA. Well worth seeing
-- and even worth recording to share with others later. For more
information go to http://www.pbs.org/affluenza.
UPDATE ON CONTEXT INSTITUTE
In spite of the lack of visible activity on the website and
with CI-NEWS, we're alive and well. I'd doing a lot of preparatory,
behind-the-scenes, work now - which I'm greatly enjoying - and
I've decided that it makes sense to wait until after we return
from the Findhorn Conference (Oct 17 - 24, http://www.findhorn.org/Edu/suscomconf.html)
before coming out into the public view again. Rest assured, however,
that new things are underway here at CI.
With much appreciation of your interest and support,
Robert Gilman
