THE NEW ISSUE OF IN CONTEXT HAS BEGUN!

I say "begun" because on the web IN CONTEXT will be more of a process than a product. So to _start_ IC #44, Summer 1996, we have just posted the following articles on the web site:

... an interactive article called "Attuning To The Future" which deals with a process I led at the Findhorn Community. In the article I briefly describe four possible futures and I want YOU to tell me how _likely_ you feel each scenario will be as part of the real future. I look forward to your feedback!

... a wonderful series of 12 articles by Tom Bender, a visionary contributor to the sustainability movement since the early 70s. The articles weave together community, spirituality, economics, education, transportation, tourism, forestry, and more. I hope you'll enjoy this "bundle of Bender." (Some of them are long enough that you might well want to print them out.)

... a review of a book about the guaranteed annual income ("The $30,000 Solution") and a review of the Permaculture Magazine from Britain. These are just a start on such reviews, and we hope you'll send us either reviews or suggestions for reviews.

A good place to start is "About This Issue." After you've had a look, I hope you'll consider contributing to the evolution of IC #44, the first online issue of IN CONTEXT.

In the web format, "issues" will be defined, not by 64 pages, but by the articles that get added to the site during a three month period. (IN CONTEXT will finally become a true quarterly!) And rather than just receiving a finished product, you can now help shape each issue as it develops. We're excited about the possibilities!

Please forward and post this message as far and wide as you like, and please let others know about 'www.context.org'.

If you are reading this because of such a forward or post, you can subscribe directly to this free email newsletter by sending the message:

THE FORUM ON 'ATTUNING TO THE FUTURE' IS OPEN

I've posted four thoughtful responses to "Attuning To The Future." You can get to them by going straight to 'www.context.org/ICLIB/IC44/ATFresps.htm' or just follow the links: home page --> latest issue --> Attuning To The Future --> forum (at the bottom of the page).

I think you'll enjoy these. If they prompt you to write one of your own, great! Send it to me at 'rgilman@context.org'.

... and in any case, be sure to send me your "votes" on the four futures.

CI'S AFFINITY LONG-DISTANCE SERVICE IS ONLINE

I've created a section (at 'www.context.org/AFFINITY/affntext.htm') that explains Context Institute's AFFINITY long-distance phone service program. This program, which we've been involved with since 1993, both saves you $ over ANY other program you currently have and helps support CI ... and it really works! (Find out why at the web site.)

If you have phone service in the USA, check it out. It is a real win-win, as the over 300 CI supporters who are already part of this program have found out. If you have any questions, send me a note or call us at 360/221-6044.

THE HOME PAGE GETS A FACE LIFT

Let me know what you think.

THANKS FOR SPREADING THE WORD

This list just keeps growing and is already up over 230 names. Please continue to let others know about it and about 'www.context.org'.

Thanks!

THE STORY IS OUT

Our big news is that at the end of September we mailed out a pair letters (in
one envelope) to the IN CONTEXT subscriber list explaining what has been
happening with Context Institute and IN CONTEXT since the end of 1995.

If you have ever been an IN CONTEXT subscriber, or want to know more about
our reasons for moving from print to the web, I think you will find these
letters interesting. If you were an IC subscriber at the end of 1995 (i.e. if
you got IC#43 on Youth), you should get the letters in the mail. If you
weren't, and you don't have access to the web, send a message to Diane Gilman
(dgilman@context.org) and she will send you the letters via email.

"THE GLOBAL CONTEXT" IS BEGUN

We have a new section on our web site that is intended for state-of-the-art
summary information on trends and alternatives in the broad areas of Nature
(earth, air, life, water); Humankind (education, health, demographics,
population); Society & Culture (from families to economics); and Hardware
(buildings, transportation, etc.). It's to be an electronic "global situation
room" with an IN CONTEXT perspective; a place where you'll be able to keep
track of what is making history, rather than just news; where you can go
smoothly from the big picture to the most directly practical.

The first topic we are researching is oil -- the most important fossil fuel
for transporation. If you have any leads, ideas, or resources concerning the
global oil situation, please let me know. Likewise, if you have any leads,
ideas, or resources concerning transporation alternatives, please let me
know.

We only just begun, but you can find out more about it from the home page
(www.context.org) or by going straight to www.context.org/GUIDES/global.htm.
Your suggestions on how to develop this section are most welcome.

SEARCH THE SITE

Since the last ci-news I've added a simple search engine that lets you search
through all the posted back issues based on keywords. Behind the scenes I'm
experimenting with a more sophisticated search engine, which I hope to post
in mid-November. This search capability should be quite helpful, as we get
more back issues posted, in making the site a really useful Sustainability
Resource Library.

THANKS FOR SPREADING THE WORD

The list is now over 650 names. Please continue to let others know about it
and about 'www.context.org'.

Thanks!

APPRECIATION AND FAREWELL TO DANAAN PARRY

It is with considerable sadness that I let you know that Danaan Parry died of
a heart attack early on the morning of 14 November at the age of 57. Danaan
was a long-time personal friend, a Context Institute Board Member, the
founder and director of the Earthstewards Network, and much, much more. He
was just in the final stages of preparing to lead a group to plant trees on a
reclaimed mine-field in Vietnam -- and to use this project as a focus for
healing of the wounds of that war. The project goes on, and is just one of
the many beautiful seeds he sowed and nurtured during his powerful life.

You can find out more about Danaan and the Vietnam project at
http://www.earthstewards.org

Danaan's articles posted so far on the CI site are:

Your can reach those who are carrying on his work at earthsteward@igc.apc.org
